Britain’s Defense Secretary Resigns After Improper Behavior

LONDON — Defense Secretary Michael Fallon has resigned after allegations emerged about inappropriate sexual behavior, the British government said.
Fallon said in a letter Wednesday to Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May that he may have "fallen short of the high standards" expected of the military.
A newspaper reported earlier that Fallon had repeatedly touched a journalist's knee.

t is one of a growing number of allegations about inappropriate behavior by British politicians and parliamentary staff.
British Prime Minister Theresa May had ordered an investigation into claims one of her senior deputies made inappropriate advances to a Conservative activist, as allegations spread of sexual harassment and abuse in British politics.

Iranians Report at Least 61 Dead, 300 Injured From Quake TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the region along the border between Iran and Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 61 people and injuring 300 in Iran, an Iranian official said. Iranian state TV said Iraqi officials had reported six deaths and 200 injuries inside Iraq, though there was no official comment from Iraq's government. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 19 miles (31 kilometers) outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja. The Islamic Republic of Iran News Network quoted the head of the country's emergency medical services, Pirhossein Koulivand, as saying at least 61 had been killed and 300 injured on Iran's side of the border. FG Approves N5.56bn for Erosion Control in six States

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N5.567 billion for the 3rd Quarter Soil Erosion Control Accelerated Intervention in six states. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, disclosed this when he briefed State House correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja. Adesina conducted briefing alongside Minister of Agriculture, Mr Audu Ogbeh as well as the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika. He gave the names of the benefiting states as Kano, Bayelsa, Sokoto, Ondo, Osun and Enugu state. “The 3rd Quarter Soil Erosion Control Accelerated Intervention has been approved in different geo-political zones of the country. “This will be in Kano state, Sokoto (Sokoto South Local Government), Ondo, Osun, Enugu and Bayelsa states. Zimbabwe’s sacked vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa said Wednesday he had fled the country as he issued a direct challenge to long-ruling President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace. The ruling ZANU-PF “is not personal property of you and your wife to do as you please,” Mnangagwa said in an angry five-page statement, vowing he would return to Zimbabwe to lead party members. “This is now a party controlled by undisciplined, egotistical and self-serving minnows who derive their power not from the people and party but from only two individuals in the form of the First Family,” he said. Police Accused of Brutality and Connivance in Lagos State

Residents of Okomala Street and Fayemi Close in Ilasamaja area of Lagos State have accused the police of brutality and connivance with a company in the area to dispossess them of their lands. They alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Oriyomi Titilayo, and operatives of the Lagos State task force on Environment had terrorised them despite a pending suit before an Ikeja High Court. The residents, who said the police supervised the demolition of six buildings including those of Pastor John Onyekwere, Blessing Olasukanmi and Mrs. Rebecca Obamulire, in outright disregard to a court ruling that ordered status quo ante, added that landlords who protested the action were beaten and bundled into a Black Maria stationed.
