Kenyan Governor, Wahome Gakuru Dies In Ghastly Motor Accident

Governor of Nyeri in Kenya, Wahome Gakuru has died after being involved in a ghastly motor accident in in Kabati on the Thika-Kenol highway.

The governor and his driver were rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital and were set to be flown to Nairobi Hospital for further treatment.

Gakuru becomes the second Nyeri Governor to pass on while in office after the late Nderitu Gachagua who died last year in February at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Governor Gakuru, who is the former vision 2030 director, was travelling to Nairobi for a talk show on Inooro TV.

Train Crash 'kills 33' in Democratic Republic of Congo A train crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 33 people, UN radio station Okapi reports. It happened in Buyofwe in the province Lualaba, in the south of the country. Radio Okapi said that the train caught fire after crashing into a ravine. According to reports, it was carrying flammable material. The train was running between Lubumbashi, the second-largest city, and the town of Luena, 2,000km (1,200 miles) from the capital, Kinshasa. The province's Governor Richard Muyej told the BBC there had been an accident but he could not confirm deaths.

Hoodlums invaded Senator Ogembe’s women empowerment programme in Kogi

Hoodlums today invaded the venue of the empowerment programme, organised by Senator Ahmed Ogembe for women in Okene, Kogi state. The Afims Hotel venue was already filled up by guests , party members and the would-be-beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, when the hoodlums came calling, wielding dangerous weapons, attacking people and disrupting the seating arrangement for the event. The few security men at the hotel were said to have been overwhelmed by the thugs, who scattered tables and chairs and triggered a bedlam. The thugs said to be armed with dangerous weapons searched frantically for Ogembe who is representing Kogi Central Senatorial district but could not lay hands on him. Ogembe of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) was said to be a few meters away from the hotel when the thugs came. FG To Pay N88bn As Damages To Civil War Victims.

 An out of court settlement application for a case involving the federal government and nine victims of the Nigerian civil war has been granted by t he ECOWAS court on Monday. The terms of the settlement obtained by TheCable newspaper stipulates that the federal government “undertakes to pay, without delay, compensation in the sum of N50 billion in full and final sum to the victims, their families and communities as contained in Schedule 4(1) to this terms of settlement. That FG undetakes to pay a total sum of N38 billion as contained in schedule 4(2) to this terms of settlement for the purposes of carrying out rebuilding of public buildings, mine centre activities, construction of class rooms, provision of prosthetics and all other activities enumerated thereunder. 95 widows of fallen heroes in Enugu receives N19m from the Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has disbursed N19 million to 95 widows of fallen heroes residing in Abakpa and Awkunanaw Barracks in Enugu State to ameliorate the hardship being faced by the women. Maj.- Gen. Adamu Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division of the Nigerian Army said this in a statement issued by Col. Sagir Musa, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of the Division on Saturday in Enugu. Musa, who explained that each of the widows received N200, 000, said that the money was presented to the widows at the division’s auditorium in Enugu on Friday. He said that Abubakar, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, urged the beneficiaries to make use of the money judiciously. Musa also said that the GOC thanked Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his continuous support to the widows and the Division. Jonathan Asks For N1bn as Travel Expenses to be Metuh's Witness

Nigeria's former President Goodluck Jonathan has asked the Abuja Federal High Court to ignore the subpoena ordering him to appear in court as a witness to testify in defence of ex-PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh. In the alternative, Jonathan sought an order directing Metuh to deposit with the court for and on his behalf the sum of N1bn to cover travelling expenses for himself and his security personnel from his home town, Otuoke, in Bayelsa State.
