Teenager kills schoolmate to postpone exams

India arrested a teenager Wednesday for allegedly slitting the throat of a seven-year-old schoolmate in hopes the murder would lead to an exam being postponed, federal investigators said.
The 16-year-old is accused of killing his young schoolmate in September at a smart private school near Delhi in an attempt to delay an impending test and parent-teacher meeting.
Police had initially detained a bus conductor over the murder, claiming he killed the boy after the young pupil resisted a sex attack.
But a spokesman for federal investigators said they had credible evidence against the “academically weak teenager, whose motive was to postpone the examination and a forthcoming parent-teacher meeting”.
“He admitted during questioning that he wanted to shut the school to defer the exams and meeting,” Central Bureau of Investigation spokesman R.K. Gaur told AFP.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, would be sent to a juvenile detention centre until his trial for murder, he added.
Gaur said the bus conductor would remain in custody until cleared by a court of any wrongdoing.
The crime made national headlines and stoked concern among parents over safety in schools.
India’s swelling middle class has fuelled the growth of private schools in a country where public education is under immense strain.
Much prestige is placed on academic achievement and children face intense pressure to score good grades. Experts say this has aggravated stress and mental illness among teenagers.
India, a nation of 1.25 billion, has the world’s highest rate of suicide. Students are particularly vulnerable.
Official figures show nearly 9,000 students committed suicide in 2015.
Health experts say many young people find it difficult to cope with the pressure to succeed and struggle to accept failure in examinations.

95 widows of fallen heroes in Enugu receives N19m from the Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has disbursed N19 million to 95 widows of fallen heroes residing in Abakpa and Awkunanaw Barracks in Enugu State to ameliorate the hardship being faced by the women. Maj.- Gen. Adamu Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division of the Nigerian Army said this in a statement issued by Col. Sagir Musa, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of the Division on Saturday in Enugu. Musa, who explained that each of the widows received N200, 000, said that the money was presented to the widows at the division’s auditorium in Enugu on Friday. Dozens killed in bus and lorry road crash in Kenya-BBC

At least 36 people have died in a head-on collision between a lorry and a Nairobi-bound bus on a notoriously dangerous road near Migaa in Kenya-BBC Local officials said the accident happened at 03:00 (0:00 GMT), and the bus was speeding and in the wrong lane. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has ranked Kenya as one of the world's worst countries for road safety. Police believe over 100 people have died in the same area on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway in recent weeks. The bus was reportedly carrying 46 passengers to Nairobi from the western town of Busia when the accident happened. Drive-by attack in Italy Macerata: Foreigners targeted, say police

Not less than four people have been injured in a series of drive-by shootings in a central Italian town, with one man arrested. According to BBC news, a ll of those injured in Macerata are foreigners, they added. The office of the town's mayor warned people in a tweet to stay indoors because of the incident. The shootings were reported in different parts of Macerata, including near the town's train station. It is unclear how many people were inside the vehicle, which was a black Alfa Romeo. Police said the injured - which some reports put as high as six - were being treated in hospital. They said that all those targeted were foreigners and local reports said the victims were black immigrants. Gunfire was heard in the Via Spalato and Via dei Velini parts of town, two key areas in an investigation into the murder of an 18-year-old girl whose body was found last Wednesday.
